MARY ANN MYLREA 1887 Ramsey

This is the last will and testament of me Mary Ann Mylrea of Coburg Road in the town of Ramsey and parish of Lezayre, spinster

I revoke all my previous testamentary instruments After payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses I give and bequeath unto my beloved sister Sarah Buckley the wife of Norris Buckley who resides with me the sum of two thousand pounds sterling which is invested and standing in my name in the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board for her own and separate use and free from the debts or control of her present or future husband.

I give and bequeath to my said sister Sarah Buckley the further sum of five hundred pounds sterling for her own and separate use and free from the debts or control of any husband. I give and bequeath to my said sister Sarah Buckley all of the furniture of my dwelling house in Coburg Road aforesaid and all the plate, linen, china, pictures, musical instruments, glass and all wines, fuel, and other consumable household stores being therein or belonging thereto.

I give and bequeath to my sister Caroline, the wife of William Laughton Wilde, the sum of five hundred pounds sterling for her own separate use and free from the debts or control of any husband.

I give and bequeath to my sister, Catherine Jane Buchanan spinster, the sum of eight hundred pounds sterling for her own separate use and free from the debts or control of any husband.

I forgive my brother-in-law William Laughton Wilde Scholastic Preceptor the principal and interest and arrears which he shall owe me at the time of my death and which is secured to me by a promissory note for fifty seven-pounds.

I forgive my brother-in-law Robert Clarke of the Mitre Hotel (husband of my sister Margaret) the debt of five hundred pounds which he owes me and all interest and arrears of interest that may be due thereon up to the day of my death and bequeath to him all documents securing the said debt and in case he should die before me this bequest is to endure in favour of his executors or administrators for the benefit of his estate and all the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate of every nature and kind whatsoever and of which I shall be possessed or over which I shall have any appointment at my death I give devise and bequeath unto my said beloved sister Sarah Buckley her executors administrators and assigns.

And I hereby appoint my said brother-in-law Norris Buckley executor of this my last will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this twenty ninth day of September eighteen hundred and eighty-six. Mary Ann Mylrea

In Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice of the Isle of Man Common Law Division Testamentary jurisdiction At a Court holden at Ramsey on the 21st day of February 1887 the annexed paper writing dated 29th day of September 1886 having been proved to be the last will and testament of Mary Ann Mylrea late of Coburg Road in the town of Ramsey parish of Lezayre spinster deceased who died on the 3rd February 1887 Norris Buckley of Coburg Road aforesaid gentleman and brother-in-law of the testatrix the executor therein named is sworn well and truly to fulfil and execute the same and to administer the personal estate of the said deceased according to law …… Gill, a judge of the Law Court

In the matter of the last will and testament of Mary Ann Mylrea late of Coburg Road in the town of Ramsey spinster deceased We the undersigned being the next of kin of the said Mary Ann Mylrea deceased do hereby consent that Norris Buckley of Ramsey the executor named in the will of the said decedent should be appointed and sworn executor in trust thereunder and probate granted thereof to him at a court to be held in Ramsey on Monday the 21st day of February 1887 as witness our hands this …. The humble petition of Norris Buckley of Ramsey No 83 Showeth That MaryAnn Mylrea late of the town of Ramsey spinster departed this life on the 3rd day of February 1887 having first duly made and published her last will and testament in writing whereof she appointed your petitioner executor in trust of her estate That your petitioner is desirous to obtain probate of the said will and to be sworn executor thereunder in form of law wherefore your petitioner humbly prays that upon proof of the matters aforesaid your honour may be pleased to grant probate of the will of the said Mary Ann Mylrea to your petitioner and your petitioner will forever pray etc etc John Lamonth for petitioner Ordered that this petition do come on to be heard at a court to be held in Ramsey on Monday the 21st day of February 1887 whereof all proper parties and persons are to have due notice – given this 14th February 1887

NOTES

  1. Oldest daughter of Daniel Mylrea & Mary Stephenson, born in Lonan in 1826
  2. She was the great great great great grand daughter of Thomas Mylrea & Margaret als Craine, of Ballacooiley, and her grand father was the second son of John Mylrea & Jane Clark. As such he did not stand to inherit Ballacooiley
  3. Mary Ann's will attests to the success she made of her life as an unmarried woman. She also provided a home for her family, most of whom were from her mother's second marriage to William Buchanan. Her story and the story of her parents is one of survivial against the odds
